Rwanda, the land of Progress

Introduction

What is it that fuels each and every country in this world? For Rwanda, it has been progress and the drive to improve the health of the population by targeting key health issues such as reducing the HIV prevalent rate among the female population, especially among female sex workers. Though it a a topic usually associated with stigma and Taboo, the government of the region is wiling to engage in this uncomfortable discussion in order to alleviate its people from this epidemic. antelopes

As part of its “Vision 2020”, Rwanda is aiming to advance from a low level developing country to a high level developing country by the year of 2020. In order to achieve this goal, the government of Rwanda with the assistance of International Organizations is focusing on improving several aspects of its economy and healthcare sectors.  As part of our Social Marketing Campaign with Partners in Health, our goal was to contribute to the attainment of Vision 2020 by focusing on one of the dire issues that needs to be tackled in order for this goal to be reached: reducing the HIV prevalent rate among the female population, especially among female sex workers. Though the government of Rwanda has done an incredible job in reducing the overall HIV rate of the country to 3%, there is still a higher level of infection among women, so our social marketing campaign was specifically targeted towards women, and more specifically, female sex workers and their clients.

Instead of presenting each slide of the social marketing campaign that was conducted by my colleagues and I in order to target the issue of HIV prevalence among females, I will touch on the bigger frameworks that we used to tackle the problem; however, the link below can allow a better visual representation of the entire topic.

Results Framework: The results framework was used to show the overall development goals of Rwanda, which was to improve the overall health of the population. we also used sub categories that will help lead us to our desired results.

Fishbone Diagram: this was another framework that we used to help us in mapping out our most important problems and how they contribute to the goal we are trying to achieve. With the fishbone diagram, our overall goal is put in the fore front, and the most important issues related to our goals are further in the diagram, while the issues that we find to be of lesser importance are put in the back of the diagram.

Work and play.

Although we were primarily in Rwanda for the purpose of DPMI, we also had the luck of experiencing some wonderful cultural activities, from visiting the real Hotel Rwanda, to meeting exceptional women who have gained economic freedom through the weaving of baskets and earrings, as well as those who paint using a very unusual painting ingredient, cow feces. This experience went way beyond what I had expected, not only did I learn tremendously from Sharon, but I also met some of the most amazing and friendly people, who refuse to let their past dictate who they are.
